I have a suggestion for you. How about you rescue a pet?
We got this email from Victoria Taylor last month and neglected to post it until now. However, we're big believers in charity (and gift!) giving all year round instead of just at the holidays, so now that we're taking stock of 2008, we thought we'd go ahead and share what Victoria had to say. The adoption program in question is called "Home 4 the Holidays", not to be confused with the 1995 Jodie Foster film by (approximately) the same name. The drive runs through today. Yes, we're lame.
From Victoria:
"As far as what is involved in supporting Home 4 the Holidays, the goal is to raise awareness of this campaign and encourage those who are considering getting a pet around the Holiday season to choose one from a shelter rather than a pet store--and save a kitty life (or doggy life!) in the process. As far as assets you can share to help build awareness, we have several Youtube videos of Felicity Huffman available to share.

Obviously, we do not recommend springing a pet on somebody as a surprise gift. My human tried this with parakeets a few times, and Grandma Slave (one of the recipients) is still ticked about it. Dang bird lived 12 noisy, messy years!
But you can always just contribute to a shelter or other animal rescue operation near you or get yourself a new meankitty. I SUPPOSE if some of you MUST have dogs, this is an all right way to come by them as well. Grandma's dog Fran was not obtained from a shelter, and she eats poo. Really, she does. Don't make me post photographic evidence.
Sincerely,
Meankitty

Even if you've missed the end of the drive date, this is still a great idea and a good post. Three of our four non contained critters (that is, dogs and cats as opposed to the hamster and fishes) were adopted from shelters. They're great.
And I agree, springing a pet on an unsuspecting recipient is awkward for all involved.
We got my sweet Belle from our local humane society. Our dog, Sky, came from a the English Setter Rescue Association.
The nice thing about having Fran around is that she makes all of us look smarter. While I wasn't here at the time I bet Grandma's cats loved the bird
