Human Wants Advice about Poo!

Dear Readers --

We got this following plea for advice a couple weeks ago, and I thought I'd let you all help answer it! I've posted MY advice below the email, but feel free to add your two bits.

***

Dear Meankitty,

My kitten is five months old and whenever he uses the litter box, he does not cover up his poop. He simply scratches around the sides of the litter box leaving the poop completely exposed. Then he just walks out. What is wrong with my kitten and how can I help him?

Sincerely,
Frustrated Owner

***

Dear FO,

Nothing is wrong with your kitten! He thinks his poo smells like roses and wants to share it with you.

Sincerely,
MK

I once had a kitten who did that, and since he came from a pet store, we figured he might've been taken from his mom before she taught him that lesson. We taught him ourselves by catching him right as he was about to skip out on covering things up. We took his little paw and very gently used it to shovel litter over his fresh pile, all the while telling him what a GOOD KITTY he was. After a few times of this and then always rewarding him when he did it on his own, he got the hang of it.

One of my adult cats does the same thing. Both cats use the same litter box, so I can't tell if she sometimes covers it and sometimes not, or if it's just the other cat's digging that covers it. I'm not sure it's a problem to worry about, but Lynne's suggestion seems a good one.

If a kitten is young enough, they can be taught, but by 5 months he's already set in his ways. Have they tried a different litter or litterbox?

wait a minute... is there something WRONG with leaving your poody-poo uncovered in the pan, piled gracefully atop the sand mountain to add a fresh bouquet of kitty throughout the house?
